Taking on a first major laboratory build or renovation can be daunting, especially for teams accustomed to focusing on science rather than real estate, design, construction, and permitting. This session will provide a practical roadmap for navigating the process, from assembling the right project team and establishing goals to documenting workflows, identifying equipment and hazards, developing a realistic program, and evaluating design options.
The speakers will discuss common challenges first-time clients encounter, including unknown existing conditions, budget and schedule decisions, changing requirements, and communication gaps between lab users and design teams. The session will also address health, safety, and welfare considerations that should be identified early, including chemical hazards, ventilation, emergency planning, ergonomics, accessibility, and other factors that can influence laboratory layout and infrastructure.
