The Supporting and Elevating Diverse Voices in the Lab Design/ Build Industry Panel features Kassandra Garza, Altair Galgana-Wood, and Regal Leftwich.

Supporting and Elevating Diverse Voices in the Lab Design/Build Industry:

A diverse workforce is crucial for introducing new ideas, innovation, and creativity—this is especially true in the laboratory design/build/renovation industry, as science and technology are advancing at a rapid pace, and lab facilities must keep up. Different perspectives, experiences, technical expertise, and collaboration skills contribute to a dynamic environment where a wide range of challenges can be addressed effectively. A diverse project team also reflects the broader population of lab users, promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities as well as encouraging the recruitment and retention of top talent from various backgrounds.

In this interactive panel discussion, our speakers will share their personal experiences, the resources that have been (or should have been) available to them throughout their careers, and insight into how to support other members of the lab design/build community. The audience will discuss ways to recruit, encourage, and elevate diverse voices in their professional networks, and the benefits of integrating new, different ideas and strategies into the lab design/build process.

Panelists: Kassandra Garza, Altair Galgana-Wood, Regal Leftwich

Learning objectives:

  1. Discuss the benefits of a diverse lab design/build workforce and the ways to incorporate fresh viewpoints into a project plan

  2. Understand that one's backgrounds and experiences play a role in their communication and work styles

  3. Learn how to provide or request helpful resources to enable your lab design/build team to flourish

  4. Discover ways to recruit, retain, and support top talent in your organization in order to see continued success

“I look forward to engaging in this dialogue about the work that we must do - for each other, as well as within ourselves - to truly empower and elevate diverse voices in the industry and move towards a promising, shared future,” said panelist, Altair Galgana-Wood.

Women in Lab Design:

The field of design and construction is constantly changing, and women are represented throughout the lab design process as architects, construction professionals, engineers, lab users, project stakeholders, and more. Women in the lab design/build/renovation industry face unique challenges, such as breaking into the industry, advancing to positions of leadership, and encouraging the next generation of women to get involved with lab design/build and renovation.

This panel discussion will feature seasoned experts who will talk about their experiences in the industry, mentorship opportunities, and how to support those who are entering the field or aspire to a management role. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions to this interactive session.

Panelists: Burcin Moehring, Lynne Cooper, Eva Baker

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand the perspectives of women in the industry from their opportunities, challenges, advice, and experience

  2. Identify the disparities in the workplace that impact women

  3. Learn how to support women in the industry and the lab design process

  4. Discover mentorship opportunities with leading women in the industry

“Hiring women in the AEC industry has recently outpaced men, however, retention continues to be a challenge. I solve for this via a coaching approach that strengthens the team, while helping individual contributors realize their potential. I’m also part of a firm, DLR Group, that resources women leaders, for example, by funding a grant for two female employees to explore the stories of women leaders and the data behind gender demographics for our firm and industry. Our collective goal is to elevate the voices of women within our profession. I look forward to exploring this further in our upcoming ‘Women in Lab Design’ panel discussion,” said panelist Burcin Moehring.
