Creating Synthetic Human Bones in The Lab

A new lab in Australia is making synthetic human bones. 

Marine Biomedical, a biomedical firm based in Broome, WA, is making bone substitutes from oysters.

The new laboratory and manufacturing facility is making synthetic bones called PearlBone from mother of pearl sourced from the Kimberly water region. 

Pearl bones are made of calcium carbonate, an essential component for bone formation, and are being used as an alternative to limestone which can cause adverse reactions and inconsistent bone formation.

The synthetic bones will be used in orthopedic, trauma, and reconstructive surgeries.

Marine Biomedical plans to recognize PearlBone with the Australia Therapeutic Goods Administration and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
