Webinar: How to Build a Vivarium
Register for this free webinar from Lab Design to gain a comprehensive overview of best practices for planning and designing vivarium facilities—from high-level strategic decisions to the critical details that ensure functionality, compliance, and animal welfare. Attendees will learn how to define facility scope and type, collaborate with end-users, and accommodate research goals across various species, all while meeting regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Building a vivarium from scratch requires careful planning and organization, beginning with answering big questions about how it will be funded, what species will be accommodated and collaborating with end-users during design.
The process involves defining the facility type (new, renovated, standalone, or satellite) and size of the vivarium (small to large). Key considerations include research goals, such as breeding, immunology, and neuroscience, as well as accreditation needs (e.g., AAALAC, NIH, FDA). Research support areas must be integrated, including laboratories, procedure spaces, imaging, and animal holding areas. Care and feeding systems are crucial, covering housing types (e.g., rodent, aquatic), feeding methods (piped, bottled), and waste management.
The webinar will give participants a comprehensive look at vivarium planning from the 30,000-foot level to critical details.

Learning objectives:
Understand the key design considerations for vivarium facilities: Learn how to define and plan the size, layout, and placement of a vivarium, including factors such as facility type (new, renovated, satellite).
Identify critical housing and care requirements: Gain knowledge on the research focus areas (e.g., immunology, neuroscience) and animal care considerations (e.g., housing systems, feeding, waste disposal) that shape vivarium design.
Learn about accreditation and regulatory requirements: Understand the necessary accreditations (e.g., AAALAC, NIH, FDA) and compliance with local building codes and safety standards for vivarium operations.
Implement efficient operations and support systems: Explore the operational aspects of vivarium design, such as loading and delivery logistics, storage, waste management.
