For laboratory projects, the concept of sustainability is well understood and generally pursued through third-party systems like LEED. But many lab projects are limited-scope renovation projects. These projects rarely feature a coordinated sustainability response as they are typically too small and too fast-paced to accommodate the additional costs and time associated with third-party rating systems.

In this webinar, the speaker will share a new approach to “unrated” lab projects that is holistic, cost-effective and easy to achieve. The session will share how FCA is using the AIA Framework for Design Excellence as a framework to organize multi-disciplinary efforts to set achievable sustainability goals, report on progress at each phase and issue a final sustainability narrative that summarizes the sustainability achievements of the projects.

Learning objectives:

  1. Analyze the emergence of new “first-party sustainability platforms” as an alternative to third-party systems like LEED.

  2. Describe the benefits of holistic, flexible, and customizable systems like the AIA Framework for Design Excellence for projects not using third-party systems.

  3. Learn how laboratory design project teams can use sustainability goals to drive innovation for their campus projects.

  4. Discover how to use the Framework for Design Excellence to unify multidisciplinary design teams via a case study of a proven limited-scope academic project.
