Compact phenolic resin is a high-performing, decorative, and finished high-pressure laminate (HPL) panel designed specifically for laboratory, high-use, and very demanding interior environments, both for horizontal and vertical applications. This session covers material properties, manufacturing processes, performance characteristics, surface and core properties, with a focus on emerging technologies, design flexibility, durability, certifications/testing, and the applications in which it can be used.

View this special presentation from the 2026 Lab Design Conference, featuring Christian Cole from Formica Corporation as he shares practical insights into compact phenolic resin materials—helping lab users and project teams understand how to evaluate performance, select appropriate surface and core technologies, and apply these materials effectively to improve durability, flexibility, and long-term lab functionality across demanding environments.

Learning objectives:

  1. Identify compact phenolic resin material, along with its properties and performance

  2. Understand the different surface and core technologies associated with compact phenolic resin material, such as EBC acrylic, RE acrylic, melamine, and hybrid; discover emerging technologies

  3. Discuss the design flexibility and durability of compact phenolic resin material

  4. Review the sustainability, certifications, industry testing, and main applications of compact phenolic resin material, illustrated by project photos

This course is approved by AIA CES for 1 LU credit.
