As the 2016 Laboratory Design Conference approaches, we will continue to make more exciting announcements about what you can expect at this annual gathering of those involved in planning, designing, engineering, constructing and operating laboratory facilities. For now, get to know the professionals who will be delivering the conference's feature presentations.

Victoria David, RA, AIA, LEED GA, is Principal with Iron Horse Architects in Denver, Colo. Victoria has developed a particular expertise in the planning and design of laboratory renovations for advanced technology, health care, corporate and non-profit R&D, academic, analytical and medical device clients both nationally and internationally. She has served on national juries, presented at numerous national conferences, written several articles for nationally recognized publications and she has participated on national committees—including LEEDS for Labs—dedicated to disseminating information on industry best practices for laboratory planning and design. She is the co-chair for the Colorado Chapter of I2SL.​

Laboratory Design recently spoke to Vicki about her background, professional experience and personal interests.

Laboratory Design (LD): How did you first get into your field?

Vicki David (VD): I always wanted to be an architect; I built model buildings to complement my older brother’s model train set up.

LD: What is a typical day like for you? 

VD: A little bit of everything.

LD: What was your favorite college class?

VD: Drawing classes and art history.

LD: What advice do you have for people just starting their career, or for students who are thinking of majoring in architecture/engineering/etc.?

VD: Ignore the person that tells you that you need to be good at math as a prerequisite to architecture school. You need to have an imagination.

LD: What do you like to do in your spare time? 

VD: International travel with family, and tennis.

LD: If you had to do something else for a living, what would it be?

VD: Painting restorations
