EPA advice could impact water codes

Tue, 10/16/2012 - 2:51pm

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently released "Integrated Municipal Stormwater and Wastewater Planning Approach Framework"—consisting of new guidelines for local governments trying to meet Clean Water Act obligations. The framework allows and encourages local governing bodies to make rules regarding green stormwater infrastructure (for instance, rain gardens, green roofs, cisterns for rainwater collection and reuse, permeable paving materials, and bioswales). The agency encourages a more integrated planning approach rather than individual consideration of each Clean Water Act requirement. Clarity in federal opinion may also encourage amendments in building codes, all with the aim of lessening the burden on sewage systems and reducing the risk of water pollution.
