Canon establishes new research laboratory in Cambridge, Mass.

Making oxygen on the moon leads to eco-friendly steel process

The industry has met little success in its search for carbon-free methods of manufacturing steel. The idea for the new method, Sadoway says, arose when he received a grant from NASA to look for ways of producing oxygen on the moon — a key step toward future lunar bases.

May jobs report shows growth in architecture and engineering

The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics released its May 2013 employment report with numbers indicating growth in jobs for the design/build and construction industries.  The U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in May. Of this architecture and engineering services grew by 4,900 jobs, while construction added 7,000.

According to a new report from BCC Research, the market for laboratory automation will grow at a 6.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to reach $3.8 billion in 2017. Market segments such as forensics and agriculture are just two of the new segments expected to increase their use of laboratory automation over the next five years.

LEED Earth offers free certification

In an effort to accelerate sustainable development around the world, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), creators of the LEED green building program, announced a new campaign offering free LEED certification to the first projects to certify in the 112 countries where LEED has yet to take root.

It is a special edition of the original Good Design Award, which was founded in Chicago in 1950.
