The ViewPort Vivarium solution is designed to simplify how animal facilities work by scheduling tasks, managing observations, reporting, messaging, and partner linking. It improves communication between animal care staff, researchers, veterinarians, and administration by streamlining the workflow while reducing paperwork. The new Partner Link application allows third-party web-based applications to be linked to ViewPort Vivarium and be displayed on the touch screens, providing information where people need it right in the vivarium.
There are two distinct interfaces: the touch screen mounted outside of the animal room, and the desktop. At the touch screen, an authorized user is able to view the standard operating procedure for a task, complete the scheduled task, and enter a critical observation—perhaps about a sick animal. If a critical observation is made, an
e-mail will be sent to alert the appropriate personnel. When a task is completed at the touch screen, the employee’s identity and a date and time stamp are recorded. The system operates in real-time, meaning a manager can view the task that was just completed in the vivarium at the desktop. The ability of the manager to see what tasks are complete and the ones that still need to be done provides accountability, visibility, and improved communication. www.edstrom.com
3-D laser confocal metrology’s next step
Olympus Microimaging has developed LEXT, a confocal laser scanning microscope for ultra-precise measurement and observation with high reliability. The new LEXT OLS3100 minimizes manual operation so even first-time users can operate the system like an expert. Both 3-D observation and high-precision 3-D measurement are possible in real time. With a horizontal resolution of 0.12 µm and a magnification range from 1203 to 14,4003, LEXT is designed for researchers working between the limits of conventional optical microscopes and scanning electron microscopes (SEM).
The Thermo Scientific Barnstead NANOpure water system offers a unique combination of reliable, ultrapure water with easy operation and maintenance and low operating cost, according to the manufacturer. Application-specific models utilize cartridge packs tailored for specific feed water types and end uses. They suit the most sensitive requirements, including IC, ICP/MS, HPLC, GC/MS, HPLC, and TOC determinations. These advanced systems produce water that consistently achieves 18.2 megohm/cm resistivity and TOC (total organic carbon) values of <1 ppb. High-capacity cartridge packs, filters, and UV lamps are designed for low operating costs. Accurate TOC monitoring is available on all systems. An experienced technical support team offers advice and troubleshooting, along with services such as a cartridge recycling program and technical application briefs to validate specific contaminant removal. www.thermo.com/purewater
Class II BSCs take guesswork
out of determining filter status
The new patent-pending Purifier Logic Class II Biosafety Cabinet combines microprocessor control, instant feedback, and rugged components with an ergonomic design. The cabinets provide personnel, product, and environmental protection and are suitable for work with agents that require BSL-1, -2 or -3 containment. These cabinets use up to 50% less energy and generate less heat than conventional models.
An exclusive feature is the information center that displays airflow status, HEPA filter life data, and alarm messages for at-a-glance monitoring. The filter monitoring system consists of an electronically commutated motor (ECM) that is programmed to deliver a precise volume of air and automatically adjusts as filters load without relying on airflow sensors. Unique features include a Smart-Start programmable start-up/shutdown operation and a Night-Smart system that maintains a clean and particulate-free cabinet during times of non-use. Purifier Logic Safety Cabinets are available in 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-ft benchtop models and carry NSF and ETL listings and CE conformity marking. www.labconco.com
Washers suit needs of vivariums
Getinge 3200 Series cage and utensil tunnel washers are designed to clean, sanitize, and dry metal or plastic cages, utensils, and racked watering bottles in animal research laboratories. These highly automated, heavy-duty tunnel-type hydro-spray washers are designed for continuous high-volume processing. Units can be recessed in one or two walls or installed free-standing.
Sump size is half the capacity of traditional units, requiring less hot water and chemicals at the time of filling. Units require 50% less steam and 30% less water. A one-piece welded cabinet and base helps eliminate the potential for leaks. Smooth chamber and tank surfaces help prevent the build-up of debris and contamination. www.getingeusa.com
Water purification system has
new programmable dispensing
Siemens Water Technologies introduces a new programmable water dispense feature for the PURELAB Ultra system. The Ultra is designed for critical laboratory applications that require up to 18.2 megohm/cm water quality on demand. The memory software in the new dispenser allows the researcher to easily record and then replicate specific volumes and flow patterns. For example, researchers can accurately and quickly repeat three dispense sequences at a time, which is important if they have multiple dilution steps or multiple volume requirements.
Other features of the dispenser include: high flow rate of up to 2 L/min; automatic alarm and shut off to prevent flooding; unique drop-by-drop dispense station; optional flexible dispense gun; and available under bench/counter installation available. PURELAB is a trademark of ELGA LabWater. www.siemens.com/water
White cleanroom hose extracts
fumes, dry materials
A flexible, white thermoplastic rubber hose for service in cleanrooms and other applications requiring an FDA-acceptable hose is being introduced by Flexaust. Flexadux T-7 White is a flexible, medium-weight, white thermoplastic hose that is reinforced with a spring steel helix and operates over a -40°F to 250°F range. Featuring a smooth interior to promote efficient air flow, it is made with FDA-acceptable materials and designed for a wide range of fume and dry material extraction applications in cleanrooms. Offered in standard 2-in. to 12-in. interior dia. sizes and custom to 24-in. i.d., this food-grade hose is supplied in standard 25- and 50-ft lengths. It exhibits excellent chemical resistance, good abrasion resistance, and great moisture and UV resistance, according to Flexaust. www.flexaust.com
