  • HDR Architecture Inc. has hired Stanley Stark, FAIA, and Warren Hendrickson, AIA, LEED AP, to expand the capabilities of its science and technology practice. Stark, previously managing partner of the Research & Development/ Academic studio at HLW International, will be VP and national director of life sciences, and will be based in HDR’s Manhattan office. Hendrickson has been named VP and principal and will be based in the firm’s Chicago office. Most recently, Hendrickson was a principal in the Chicago office of CUH2A. HDR is an architecture, engineering, and consulting firm with more than 150 offices worldwide; recent major science projects include nanotech centers for the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and NIST, as well as labs at the Univ. of Virginia, Univ. of Nebraska Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Univ. School of Medicine.

  • Tsoi/Kobus & Associates, the Cambridge, Mass.-based architecture, interiors, and planning firm, has hired Mark Reed, AIA, LEED AP, as a principal. Reed will extend TK&A’s capabilities in the research and development, healthcare, academic, and commercial markets. Previously, he was a principal at Boston-based William Wilson Associated Architects Inc., where he was design leader for the new Laboratory for Interface Science and Engineering (LISE) building at Harvard Univ. in collaboration with architect Rafael Moneo.

  • Dewberry, Fairfax, Va., has merged with IES Engineers, Chapel Hill, N.C., a MEP/FP engineering firm. The Chapel Hill office will be known as IES Engineers-Dewberry. IES specializes in healthcare and laboratory projects. Dewberry provides architecture, engineering, program management, landscape architecture, planning, and other services from 35 offices nationwide.

  • SmithGroup, Washington, D.C., has hired Greg Gouldin as a principal. Gouldin will be responsible for client development and strategic planning in the science and technology and healthcare sectors. Formerly, he was a VP at Skanska USA Building in Rockville, Md. SmithGroup offers architecture, engineering, interiors, and planning capabilities to international clients in the markets of health, science and technology, education, workplace, cultural, and urban design and planning.

  • Cannon Design, Baltimore, has named John W. Rietz, AIA, LEED AP, as principal and Scott R. Thomas as VP. Rietz’s experience includes project management for the Univ. of Maryland Shady Grove Educational Center III, a 192,000-ft2 life sciences research center pending LEED Gold certification. Thomas’ work has concentrated on healthcare projects. Cannon provides planning and design services for the science and technology, healthcare, education, government, sports, recreation, and civic/ justice sectors.

  • Gilbane Building Co., Philadelphia, has hired Ronda M. Bailey as regional business development manager. Bailey will oversee the sales and business development activity of the firm in the Delaware Valley regional office and will manage the business development department in the Philadelphia office. Gilbane provides construction and real estate development services for multiple markets, including life sciences, healthcare, mission-critical, and other sectors.

  • LG Solid Source LLC, Peoria, Ariz., has announced that its LG HI-MACS Acrylic Solid Surface, Volcanics Collection, Eden Collection, and LG Viatera Natural Quartz building products have been Greenguard IAQ Certified for low chemical emissions, with and without LG adhesive. LG Solid Source manufactures solid acrylic and engineered stone countrtops for the educational, hospitality, commercial, and residential markets.

  • KlingStubbins, Washington, D.C., has hired David W. Esch, AIA, as senior project manager. Esch will concentrate on project development and management of the firm’s R&D and higher education projects in the Washington metro area. Recent experience includes project management for the Hatfield Clinical Research Center at the NIH Bethesda campus, as well as nanofabrication and science buildings at Duke and Cornell universities. The firm has also hired Wanchul Lee, AIA, as a senior architect in the D.C. office, concentrating on federal government and international projects. KlingStubbins provides architecture, engineering, interiors, planning, and landscape architecture services.

  • Francis Cauffman Architects, Philadelphia, has opened a new office in New York City, the firm’s fourth. The company concentrates on architecture, interior design, and planning projects in the healthcare, science and technology, government/ justice, and corporate markets. Recent research facilities include the Almac group’s North American R&D and manufacturing campus in Lower Salford Township, Pa., and the Buffalo (N.Y.) Life Sciences Complex (Roswell Park Cancer Institute/ Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics).

  • Affiliated Engineers Inc., Madison, Wis., has opened a new office in Houston. The multi-office firm specializes in the design of integrated systems for technically complex building projects and facilities.   • ARTEL, a provider of liquid-handling quality assurance systems, has appointed Bjoern Carle to laboratory applications scientist at the firm’s Westbrook, Maine, site. Carle will contribute to the company’s R&D efforts, concentrating on the design and engineering of new products and product enhancements, and will also provide instrument validation and on-site customer training.
