SmithGroup, Chicago, has merged with AREA Design, Chicago. AREA is a seven-person commercial interiors firm headed by Angie Lee, FAIA, IIDA, and was founded in 2005. Lee will be a VP at SmithGroup, The firm provides architecture, engineering, interiors, and planning services, with a major emphasis in the science/research market sector. In addition, SmithGroup has announced that principal Noel Bryan, AIA, has been promoted as leader of the Chicago studio. Bryan was previously director of operations for the firm’s Phoenix office.
PerkinElmer Inc., Waltham, Mass., has expanded its multi-vendor qualification and validation services for customers in heavily regulated environments. Ellerbe Becket has launched a new practice area that focuses on technology and the life sciences sector. Robert A. Bracamonte, AIA, principal and design director for the San Francisco office, will lead the practice, along Roland Lazzarotto, AIA. Bracamonte and Lazzarotto will expand the Ellerbe Becket’s presence in the life sciences and technology industry sectors with a team of planners and designers experienced in designing complex buildings for science and technology clients. The practice will be run from the firm’s San Francisco office.
Cubellis, Boston, has merged with Seyffer + Koch Architectural Group, Glen Rock, N.J. S+K is an architecture, planning, and interiors firm concentrating on academic and science clients. DLR Group, Phoenix, has acquired two design firms: Becker Winston, Philadelphia, and Newman Cavender & Doane, Denver. Becker Winston improves DLR’s reach in the Northeast and adds historical preservation capabilities. The Newman Cavender acquisition, now known as DLR Group Newman Cavender, broadens DLR’s geographic reach in the West and beefs up its corporate and interiors practice, as well as justice design. DLR, which offers comprehensive architecture, engineering, planning, and interiors services, has announced its intention to seek further acquisition candidates in multiple markets, including Florida, California, and Texas. Major science projects include the Peter Kiewit Institute at the Univ. of Nebraska, Omaha, and the Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univ. Academic Complex, Prescott, Ariz.
Esco Biotech, Singapore, has changed its name to ESCO Technologies Inc. The firm’s U.S. operations have moved to a larger facility in Hatboro, Pa., near Philadelphia, and product offer ings have been increased to encompass a larger selection of BSCs, laminar flow cabinets, animal containment workstations, ductless fume hoods, standard fume hoods, and related products.

Shen Milsom & Wilke, a security, acoustics, vibration control, and IT infrastructure design consultant based in New York City, has acquired Equipment Planners Inc., formerly of Summit, N.J. The move is expected to bolster Shen Milsom & Wilke’s offerings to the healthcare design market.
BOC Edwards, Wilmington, Mass., has been rebranded as Edwards, following its sale by The Linde Group in May. The firm, now owned by CCMP Capital, intends to grow as an independent, privately owned company. The change harks back to the company’s roots in the 1920s as Edwards High Vacuum International. Edwards supplies vacuum, abatement, and chemical management equipment and services.
