Monitor provides information on
breathable nanoparticle aerosols
The AEROTRAK 9000 nanoparticle aerosol monitor, from TSI, indicates the surface area of nanoparticle aerosols that deposit in the lung. The monitor is a portable, battery-operated diffusion charger plus electrometer with real-time surface area concentration readout and data logging capability.
Nanoparticles are defined as having dimensions from 1 to 100 nm (0.001 to 0.1 µm) by material scientists and aerosol physicists. Particles in this size range are capable of depositing in all areas of the respiratory tract. Nanoparticles are too small to be measured by traditional mass-based methods, and recent research has shown that the surface area of nanoparticles is highly correlated to adverse health effects. The AEROTRAK 9000’s color touch screen displays data and graphs in real time, shows statistics including 8-hr time-weighted average, minimum, maximum, and average surface area concentrations. Users can also program custom sampling protocols.

Level sensing probes monitor
empty and full conditions
Conductive level sensing probes monitor liquid quantity, notifying system software when processing fluid bottles have reached full or empty states. In addition to allowing instrument software to detect and react to system status, the
fluoropolymer-lined aspirate and dispense probes provide an inert, consistent fluid path with no possibility of leaks from tip to pump. Probes accurately monitor sample levels in cuvettes, as well as waste, reagent, and buffer solutions, providing analytical instrument software the information needed to direct system changes.
Depending on the application, information from the probes can be used by the system to automatically stop processing until reagent or buffer solution is replenished or a waste bottle is emptied. The compact probes require only a simple electrical connection and have no moving parts to fail, resulting in more reliable operation when compared to the bulky float switches traditionally used for level sensing. The inner diameter of the stainless steel probe can be lined with PTFE or FEP fluoropolymer tubing to create a single inert fluid path, eliminating the possibility of unwanted chemical interaction and the potential introduction of air along the entire length of the tube. The design reduces carryover and improves wash capabilities, retaining the necessary flow characteristics for efficient system performance.

Vortex shedding flowmeter and temperature transmitter introduced
Omega Engineering’s FV100 series transmitters are made up of in-line flow meters that use the vortex-shedding measuring principle. As the fluid strikes a bluff body, imparting alternating vortices downstream of the bluff, it creates a vibration on a sensor body containing a piezoelectric crystal. The frequency of the sensor is proportional to the velocity of the fluid and is amplified and converted to a 4 to 20 mA output signal. A vortex technology meter has no moving parts to jam, and its bright LED displays flow in either liters or gallons. It can measure flow in either direction and can be used with non-viscous, clean or dirty water-like liquids. Ideal for cooling loops that use water or 50% glycols and for up to 10% water-soluble machine coolant.
Power supply provides labs
with affordable solution
Falcon Electric Inc. has launched its FN Series family of parallel or N+1 redundant Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSes) designed to meet the demands of laboratory equipment and associated computer networks with a scalable platform and N+1 redundancy. The new double-conversion on-line designed FN Series models have a faster processor utilizing digital signal processing (DSP) technology, thereby improving performance, capability, and reliability.
The new hard-wired FN Series UPS will be available in various model configurations. All models support a hardwire connection to any 208-240Vac single-phase, 2-wire plus ground power source. Certain models provide a single, isolated 208-240Vac 2-wire plus ground output; others provide an isolated 240/120Vac split-phase
3-wire plus ground output.
When the FN models are configured in parallel, with the addition of one extra UPS, true N+1 redundancy can be achieved. For example, if 18kVA of N+1 redundant power is needed, four 6kVA UPS units would be connected in parallel. The paralleled UPSes communicate via a proprietary high speed serial bus. In the event one UPS unit malfunctions, it is immediately detected, taken off-line and isolated from the other functional units, while leaving the connected critical load unaffected. Servicing of the UPS is a simple matter of removing the affected unit.
Airgas has introduced the smart indicating gas valve VIP Series, a newly patented product that provides either flow control or positive shut-off while maintaining gas purity for gases that are at least 99.9999% pure. The valves’ Indicating Purifier provides a visual indication of contaminants in the gas stream while removing them, ensuring consistent performance. The valves safeguard the gas stream and process if a lower grade of gas was wrongly connected to the system, a leak has developed, a component has added a contaminant, or there is a purity issue. VIP provides a visual indication if leaks have developed between the gas source and the valve, and the purifier changes color while removing impurities, indicating the degree of contamination. Available in both a quarter-turn and multi-turn model.
