  • Description: Four-story structure will house the departments of chemistry and environmental science, as well as 6,000-ft2 for the biology department (which is based in the adjacent McGowan North facility). Included in the program are 23 research labs, eight teaching labs, five large, tiered classrooms, and a multipurpose classroom/ lab facility. Two rooftop greenhouses will be used for teaching and research. McGowan South will be DePaul’s first LEED project and will be designed to achieve Silver-level status.

  • Description: Facility replaces an existing outdated diagnostic lab, providing testing for diseases such as chronic wasting disease, mad cow disease, and avian influenza. A 1,200-ft2 BSL-3 lab offers space for work with highly infectious agents. Also in the program are an electron microscopy lab with a floating floor for vibration control and a 4,000-lb. tissue digester for waste disposal. The state-funded building, on the campus of the university, will host cooperative work between the university’s School of Veterinary Medicine and the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. It is part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, including a national surveillance program for avian influenza.

Univ. of Louisville (Ky.), Biomedical Research Building III.

  • Description: The building adds a third biomedical facility and forms a quad with existing labs nearby (Baxter I and Baxter II). The facility is designed to help the university attract and retain high-quality researchers, consolidate existing programs, and expand and add to established programs. Focuses will include genetics and molecular medicine, oncology, cardiovascular disease, and bioengineering. Facility will provide generic, open wet labs and vivarium support space for ~90 principal investigators, and will support the school’s entire research community with facilities for bioinformatics, proteomics and BSL-3 core labs, and interaction spaces.

  • Description: Three-level structure contains teaching, research, and administrative space for the UMD departments of biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. Program encompasses 16 faculty/student research labs, 16 teaching labs, a computer teaching lab, lab support, a student study room, and a central classroom. The project recently won a 2007 General Design Honor award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. The site design emphasizes native plantings, including an experimental wetland garden with emphasis on cultivation of wild rice.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Biological Defense Research Program medical research laboratory replacement facility, Fort Detrick, Md.

  • Budget: n.a million.
  • Size: 700,000 ft2
  • Project team:CUH2A/Smith Carter/ Hemisphere, Lawrenceville, N.J. (joint venture architecture/engineering team); contractor TBA.
  • Completion date: 2012.
  • Description: Project will provide integrated research space for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), which is the centerpiece of the new National Interagency Biodefense Campus at Fort Detrick. The facility will include offices, an animal facility, and multiple labs, including BSL-2, -3, and a small -4 suite. The project will replace outdated and overcrowded existing medical research labs at the site.

  • Description: The four-story Caudill lab building is part of the university’s $205 million Carolina Physical Science Complex and is the second new structure in the plan, following the completion last year of the 128,000-ft2 Chapman Hall (see Laboratory Design, Dec. 2006). Caudill provides research lab and office space for the department of chemistry, augmenting existing space in two other lab buildings and replacing outdated space in Venable Hall, which is scheduled for demolition. It includes wet and dry labs, computational labs, and shared instrument space. Emphases include physical, analytical, organic, and polymer chemistry. Among the special features are HEPA-filtered synthetic labs, biosafety and nanotech research capability, and an NMR suite for up to eight magnets.

  • Description: Health Careers & Natural Sciences Building will encompass lab, classroom, office, and instructional space, with two stories for health careers development and three stories for natural sciences (including microbiology, chemistry, zoology, and botany). Technology Education Center will contain three stories of classrooms, offices, and instructional space, and will support teaching of architecture, automotive, HVAC, integrated engineering and manufacturing technology, interior design, welding, and environmental horticulture. The Technology Education Center’s special features include high-bay space for automotive work, a large lecture hall, a 40-station computer lab, and a greenhouse.
