Monitor provides information on
breathable nanoparticle aerosols
The AEROTRAK 9000 nanoparticle aerosol monitor, from TSI, indicates the surface area of nanoparticle aerosols that deposit in the lung, corresponding to the ICRP lung deposition curves for the tracheobronchial and alveolar regions of the human respiratory tract. The monitor is a portable, battery-operated diffusion charger plus electrometer with real-time surface area concentration readout and data logging capability.
Nanoparticles are defined as having dimensions from 1 to 100 nm (0.001 to 0.1 µm) by material scientists and aerosol physicists. Particles in this size range are capable of depositing in all areas of the respiratory tract. Nanoparticles are too small to be measured by traditional mass-based methods, and recent research has shown that the surface area of nanoparticles is highly correlated to adverse health effects. The AEROTRAK 9000’s color touch screen displays data and graphs in real time, shows statistics including 8-hr time-weighted average, minimum, maximum, and average surface area concentrations. Users can also program custom sampling protocols. Contact: TSI Inc. 800-847-2811; www.tsi.com.

Monitor provides TOC info for
high-purity water systems
The new Total-Check 900 in-line TOC monitor, from Siemens Water Technologies, is a stand-alone unit designed to accurately measure total organic carbon in water from high-purity systems. It can be used with any lab water purification unit to measure TOC levels from 1 to 999 ppb with high repeatability and accuracy, and expands the usefulness of systems that do not have built-in TOC monitors. TOC measurements are critical for many applications in the clinical, analytical, and municipal lab sectors. Automatic analysis mode gives a continuous reading; manual analysis mode prevents repeated analysis of a stagnant sample; and standby mode prevents sample water from flowing through the monitor. Units provide an easy-to-read LCD display and can be wall-mounted. Contact: Siemens Water Technologies. 866-926-8420; www.siemens.com/water.
Ductless balance
enclosures receive
independent verification
AirClean Systems has announced that its PowderSafe Type B ductless balance enclosures have successfully completed performance verification by SafeBridge Consultants Inc., for containment of particulate matter. The Type B PowderSafe units are designed and engineered to provide horizontal airflow and incorporate the vendor’s HEPASafe filter-change technology, designed to facilitate safe and easy filter change-outs. The enclosures are microprocessor-controlled to provide constant monitoring of airflow and HEPA filtration. They are designed to be suitable for work with both known and unknown toxic or potent compounds. Contact: AirClean Systems. 800-849-0472; www.aircleansystems.com.
Gloveboxes provide controlled
conditions, economical pricing
The Precise line of controlled-atmosphere gloveboxes is designed to offer high-end features at economical prices, according to manufacturer Labconco Corp. The units maintain a leak-tight, controlled-condition environment for applications such as organometallic chemistry, alternative energy cells, or hydrophilic chemicals. They can maintain levels of oxygen as low as 5 ppm, or levels of moisture as low as 50 ppm. Features include a one-piece molded, medium-density polyethylene shell with a black, chemical-resistant worksurface; a viewing window of laminated safety glass; six manual valves for purging, filling, and drying train connections; and space-saving inner and outer transfer chamber doors that pivot upward. The 13-ft3 interior of the main chamber meets Class 1 atmosphere conditions for leak rate per ISO 10648-2 test methods. The transfer chamber is 11-in. long and also features a pressure gauge with readings from 0 to –29 in. of mercury. Contact: Labconco Corp. 800-821-5525; www.labconco.com.

Portable gas detector monitors
up to six gases simultaneously
The Gas Sniper portable gas detector can monitor up to six gases simultaneously and identifies leaks around many potential sources, including valves, seals, drains, and other connections; pressure-relief devices and vents; and pumps and compressors. It is suitable for performing EPA Method 21 fugitive emission monitoring of volatile organic compound (VOC) leaks from process equipment. Measurements can be reported as ppm,
% LEL, or % volume. The unit will operate continuously for up to 30 hr on alkaline batteries or 18 hr on Ni-Cad batteries. A high-resolution LCD screen provides easy viewing of all measurements, alarms, and operating status. Standard accessories include a shoulder strap, alkaline batteries, a hydrophobic probe, sampling hose, internal hydrophobic filter, and manual. New point-of-use system produces Type II pure water
The Barnstead DIamond TII Type II water system produces water directly from tap using a combination of reverse osmosis, UV oxidation, and deionization. Users can draw directly from the unit for small volume needs or from 30- or 60-L reservoirs for larger volumes. An optional reservoir UV lamp ensures water in storage remains free of bacteria. The LCD display provides data for resistivity, conductivity, TDS, operating pressures, and reservoir water level. Resistivities are available up to 15 Megohm-cm; TOC values are below 10 ppb.
