  • KlingStubbins has been formed as a new business entity through the formal merger of the Philadelphia firm Kling and Cambridge, Mass.-based The Stubbins Associates. The A/E firms previously had announced an “affiliation,” which has been in effect since 2003. The merged organization includes 500 employees, maintaining the Philadelphia and Cambridge offices as well as branches in Las Vegas; Raleigh, N.C.; Washington, D.C.; and San Francisco. Leadership includes CEO Robert G. Thompson, AIA; director of design Bradford White Fiske, AIA; director of engineering Michael R. Lorenz, PE; and senior principal for strategic growth Scott Simpson, FAIA. The merged firm has also announced the promotion of the following employees as shareholders: Alberto Cavallero, AIA, LEED AP; Pascal Pittman, AIA; Ray Doyle, PE; Scott Waters, AIA; Tejoon Jung, AIA; Richard Ashworth, AIA; Lou Angelous, AIA; Richard Mark; and Jim Yadavaia, CPA. Research and development is a key market sector for the firm; both Kling and Stubbins are previous recipients of multiple architectural awards for lab buildings.
  • Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, New York City, has expanded its Science + Technology group with the appointment of two new principals. Jim Berge, AIA, LEED AP, joins HOK as principal and director of Science + Technology, and T.H. Chang joins as principal and strategic director of Science + Technology. Berge and Chang both bring extensive science facility design experience to the office. In addition, HOK chairman William E. Valentine, FAIA, recently received the Legend Award for contributions to the field of design in a competition sponsored by Contract magazine.
  • Greenheck, Schofield, Wis., has received the Gold award from Consulting Specifying Engineer magazine in its 2006 Product of the Year competition, HVAC category. The winning product was the vendor’s Vektor high plume dilution laboratory exhaust blower, which uses a proposed ACMA test standard to check safety- related performance.
  • BSA LifeStructures announces that four of its Chicago employees have recently been certified as LEED Accredited Professionals by the U.S. Green Building Council. The new LEED APs are Andy Lane and Megan Burgess of the firm’s architectural group, and Todd Reust and Janie Shestopalov of the firm’s engineering group. BSA operates offices in Chicago and Indianapolis and designs facilities for healthcare, education, research, and technology.

  • Holabird & Root, Chicago, has relocated. The headquarters office for this multi-branch A/E firm is now at 140 S. Dearborn St., Chicago, IL 60630; 312-357-1771; fax: 312-3570-1909.

  • SmithGroup, a multi-office architectural, engineering, interiors, and planning firm, has promoted senior architectural designer Jim Luckey to principal in the Chicago office. Luckey’s expertise includes planning and design of hospitals, labs, research centers, and office buildings.

  • Cannon Design, Los Angeles, has named Scott F. Reed, AIA, regional market and practice leader, with responsibility for strategic growth of the firm’s West Coast and Pacific Northwest practice. Reed, a principal in Cannon’s Los Angeles office, will also oversee the market initiatives of the Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design and for the newly formed Cannon Copenhagen lab planning and programming consultancy. Cannon has also announced that Eric D. Sweet, CCCA, LEED AP, has joined the firm as associate VP in the Buffalo, N.Y. office.
