  • Description: Consolidation project on 30-acre parcel will refashion historic hangars to house more than 500 staff members scattered throughout Oahu. The facility will include offices, wet labs, marine animal labs, and support, including support for three NOAA research vessels. The Pacific Aviation Museum will also be housed on the island. Multiple sustainability strategies will be incorporated in the design, including an innovative passive ventilation system that takes advantage of the prevailing tradewinds. LEED Gold certification is being sought.

  • Size: 60,000 ft2

  • Completion date: 4Q2007.
  • Description: The Nebraska Center for Virology comprises BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, offices, and conferencing spaces that will support research in AIDS and other diseases. This new facility will anchor a growing research quad that includes both plant and animal research facilities, giving Nebraska a unique opportunity for cross- discipline research. The collaborative design process included brainstorming, interactive 3-D modeling and sketching, and rapid prototyping.

  • Completion date: 3Q2006.
  • Description: Wood-framed structure in West Hollywood began its life in the 1950s as a nightclub and was later used by Cedars-Sinai as an administrative facility. Renovation allowed consolidation of the formerly scattered Applied Proteomics Group, and provides lab, meeting, and administrative space supporting analysis of blood proteins to develop disease therapies. Features include extensive specialty gas systems, 100% redundant backup power capability, wet lab and sample processing areas, mass spec sample and data analysis rooms, and space for data visualization with a state-of-the-art TouchTable instrument.

Stonehill College, science center, Easton, Mass.


  • Budget: $34 million.

  • Size: 89,000-ft2
  • Project team: S/L/A/M Collaborative, Boston/Glastonbury, Conn. (architecture, structural engineering); SEi Cos., Boston (MEP engineering); Nitsch Engineering Inc., Boston (civil engineering); Bond Bros., Waltham, Mass. (preconstruction, cost estimating, construction management).
  • Completion date: Spring 2009
  • Description: Multidisciplinary building will house teaching and research programs in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and psychology. Features include a significant amount of public gathering space for collegewide use, as well as teaching and research labs and support space, administrative space, classrooms, and break-out spaces. Stonehill, a Catholic college, emphasizes sustainability, and multiple green strategies will be incorporated in the design.

  • Description: Facility is part of the new network of regional biocontaiment labs funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases. Building will include BSL-3 research labs and associated support areas, and will support missions in biodefense and infectious disease research.
